HMD Fusion Review

After the transition from Nokia to HMD, Human Mobile Devices has launched some interesting smartphones and feature phones.

The main focus of these phones is on quality and practicality rather than raw power and performance.

With the HMD Fusion, HMD has focused on reliability and self-repair (all of their smartphones are repairable), while also giving it a modular twist, making it a fun and exciting device.

It is priced at Rs 17,999 in India, which makes it one of the most competitive budget smartphones from Chinese brands.

Today in this article we will discuss a new phone launched by HMD named HMD Fusion and will know about all its features.

HMD Fusion Design

This phone is primarily based on design—in fact, I can confidently call it a design exercise. And it’s a bit strange because, for a phone so focused on design, it’s only available in one finish in black.

Additionally, there are two types of snap-on cases, branded as Outfitters. Comes in a casual outfit box and is a soft TPU case that can be applied to the phone.

While this provides better protection from falls, it also makes the phone thicker. Sadly, HMD only sells the basic black outfit in India.

HMD Fusion Flashy Output

Then there are smart outfits, and HMD has launched two of these in India—Flashy Outfit and Gaming Outfit. Despite its looks, the flashy outfit (priced at Rs. 2,999) hides a unique feature.

The blue colored case has a raised silver ring that protrudes around the phone’s camera module.

There’s a hinge on the top, and you can pull up the bottom of the ring to turn it into a dedicated flash unit or ring light, letting you illuminate your subject or yourself when you’re vlogging.

HMD Fusion Gaming Output

The second, the Gaming Outfitter (priced at Rs. 2,999), needs no explanation. It works as a game controller, giving mobile gamers access to physical buttons and keeping their thumbs off the display.

Smart Outfits connect via 6 contact pins on the bottom of the case, allowing users to control outfit-related features through the phone.

When you put on a flashy outfit, a bulb icon appears in the viewfinder of the camera app. This allows you to turn on the LED ring and adjust its brightness.

HMD Fusion Specification

The HMD Fusion packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, which is built using a 4nm fabrication process, which should make it good enough for most budget smartphone-related processing needs.

It also has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which can be expanded via a shared slot for a microSD card.

The phone has only two SIM card slots, supporting either two nano SIM cards or a SIM card SD card combination.

The Qualcomm chipset provides strong connectivity, supporting multiple 5G bands, and Bluetooth.

The phone has only two cameras. The 108-megapixel primary camera produces oversharpened 12-megapixel binned images in daylight, while it also captures decent low-light images if you use the dedicated Night mode.

Details are a bit lacking, but the dynamic range is good. The selfie camera captures satisfactory 12-megapixel images, even if you don a flashy outfit, but there isn’t much detail.

HMD Fusion Performance

The HMD Fusion sports a 6.5-inch HD IPS LCD panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, which doesn’t seem like much even for a budget smartphone.

It gives you the basic features and is bright enough for outdoor use, but its performance gets a little weak in direct sunlight, which can become a problem when using the camera app.

It’s also not that sharp, making text and images appear a bit blurry. Despite forcing its peak refresh rate, it still displays obvious ghosting when scrolling.
