What did the study find about iPad and iPhone?

A new study has shown that people generally use their iPads for a longer period of time than iPhones. This report has been conducted by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), which studied the data till March 2024.

According to the CIRP report, 67% of people who upgraded iPad in the last 12 months continued to use their old device in some form or the other. Of these, 36% people preferred to use their old iPad themselves, while 31% people gave it to their family or friends.

Of the remaining people, 23% replaced their iPad due to loss, theft or damage, while 6% sold it and only 3% enrolled in a trade-in program.

Now if we talk about iPhone, the figures are quite different. Only 41% of people who upgraded their iPhone in the last 12 months chose to keep their old phone or give it to someone.

Of these, 30% people preferred to use their old iPhone themselves, while only 11% gave it to their family or friends.

Additionally, 49% of people included their old iPhone in a trade-in program, and 6% of people sold it. Only 6% of people replaced their iPhone due to loss, theft or damage.

Less pressure to upgrade:

Smartphone technology changes rapidly, prompting users to upgrade every few years with the lure of new features and performance.

On the other hand, changes are not seen that fast in tablet technology. A powerful iPad can provide good performance for many years, so that users do not feel the need to upgrade anytime soon.

Durability:

People generally don’t upgrade their iPads as often as they upgrade their phones. This means that iPads have more time to prove durable.

Additionally, most people use their iPads at home, making them less likely to be lost, stolen, or dropped.

Low resale value:

The resale value of iPads is much lower than that of iPhones. This means that selling old iPads does not bring much profit. As a result, people prefer to continue using them or give them away.

What changes are seen in the use of iPads?

CIRP report also states that there is a change in how people use their iPads. Earlier iPads were mainly used for entertainment and web browsing. But now, people are using iPads for work, studies, and creative work as well.

Due to this change, people have started using their iPads for longer periods of time. Earlier, people used to buy iPad just for entertainment and replace them after a few years.

But now, people use iPads for important things like work and study, so they have no reason to change it.
