How many accounts did WhatsApp ban?
WhatsApp banned a total of 71,82,000 accounts in India in April 2024. Out of these, 13,02,000 accounts were actively banned by users even before any reports came in.
Why did WhatsApp ban more than 71 lakh accounts in India?
WhatsApp said that in April, more than 7.1 million accounts were banned in India for violating their rules. This is a slightly lower number than in March, when more than 7.9 million accounts were banned.
In this month’s report, WhatsApp said that they banned more than 7.1 million accounts, of which 1.3 million were blocked proactively before any complaints were received from users.
WhatsApp received 10,554 complaints from India, of which only 6 were acted upon. “Action” means complaints on which WhatsApp took action to fix something.
With more than 550 million users in India, WhatsApp is one of its largest markets. They also received two orders from the country’s Grievance Redressal Committee, which they complied with.
WhatsApp said in its monthly report that “we will maintain transparency in our work and include information about our efforts in future reports.”

Accounts banned in March 2024
Last month, WhatsApp said that they had banned more than 79 lakh accounts in India. Also, they received a record 12,782 complaints, of which only 11 were acted upon.
WhatsApp said, “We allow users to block contacts and report problematic content or contacts within the app. We pay close attention to user feedback and work with experts to prevent misinformation, promote cybersecurity and maintain election integrity.”
Apart from this, they said that a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers and experts in law enforcement, online security and technical development work to oversee their efforts to maintain transparency.
